Veterinary Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Veterinary Hyperbaric Medicine Society (VHMS), USA position statement:

The use of HBOT has the potential to accelerate the normal healing process and thus the potential to enhance the health and welfare of animals.


Contraindications

Restricted Medications & Medical Conditions for HBOT: 
There are several medications that will preclude your horse from undergoing a HBOT session. If your horse is being treated with or has recently been treated with any of the following medications your horse will not be able to be treated with HBOT until the drug is no longer in your horse’s system:
Cis platinum
Disulfiram
Doxorubicin
Mafenide acetate
Opiates

In addition, there are a few conditions in which HBOT is not recommended until the condition is treated or resolved.  These conditions include:
Untreated pneumothorax
Tension pneumothorax
Strangles
Fever
Seizure disorders
Viral infections
Optic neuritis
Scouring/ diarrhea
Chronic emphysema with CO2 retention

History of the following:
Guttural pouch disease
Eustachian tube disease
Spontaneous pneumothorax

Thoracic surgery
